FESTIVITIES.

A good part of the Canary Island’s festivity’s origins have a religious substrate, but in others their roots can be found among the aboriginal traditions. Most festivities have suffered variations with the passing of time, and while some have disappeared, other were born full of fresh energy with different aims.

The reasons for celebrating are varied and were originated by many issues related to social development.

The predominating festivities are those in which the religious rituals mark the guidelines, but those in La Rama are closer to very ancient traditions.

There are fun activities that aim to end the drought and its sequels of hunger and misery, while others such as the always welcome carnivals, not only aim at entertaining great masses of the population but also at leaving behind good economic dividends for those merchants related to this activity.

These festivities are an expression of life, featuring popular sentiments and in the Canary Islands they maintain their freshness because they are constantly evolving.
